Songs

All songs are registered with socan under my name, unless otherwise noted...

the first group of songs were all created in a music program called 'sibelius' which i have converted to mp3 files for easy listening... i wrote all of these songs and arrangements in the past year (2009/10) with the exception of 'little one' which is a bit older.. the 10 piece arrangement for it was done sometime in early 2009..i have not added drum tracks to these sibelius files as my goal is to play drums with others in a recorded context in the next few months, at which point i will have live versions of these same songs...

the other songs further down are mostly songs i wrote and give an overview of music i have been involved in the past 20 odd years...

Enjoy!

james darling is visting after a few years of gigging on cruise ships.. we got to play music yesterday and will do so again on friday... it is nice to reconnect with a friend from the past...

after playing this song friday with james, marisha, and larry, i made some revisions that might help this along a wee bit better.... this is now a revised edition.... thanks for the input larry, marisha and james...

many of these song ideas i share here are template type ideas i'm working on.. they come off a music notation program called sibelius.. they are devoid of real people making music, but give me a framework to share my ideas with other musicians at another time.. this is part of the process for me at this time..  some people might say it is premature to share these ideas, but i enjoy sharing else i wouldn't be doing this...

another work in progress.. nico is co-composer on this song for 20%.. he has been very helpful with some harmonic ideas that i think are great.. we played it tonight with larry and marisha for the first time, along with a few originals by everyone - nico, marisha and larry.. i wish you could all hear the song ideas these 3 brought to the session tonight..

written for 2 sax -tenor, alto and voice.... i added some percussion to give more of an idea on the rhythmic feel i am probably going to try to go for when i play this....

this tune is dedicated with much love and affection to my dear brother GORDON who does a lot of return trips!

possible 8 bar vamp in the middle for drums or? remember these are sibelius files, so they are only a template for taking this to the next level - playing these ideas with people... the tempo on this is 1/4=240 and the idea is an uptempo jazz feel to it rhythmically..

A very long road - version for 2 cellos, or 1 really amazing cello player!

i had a wonderful time playing music with 2 "new" musicians in my life yesterday - helena jung and john hyde - both beautiful musicians - cello and bass, that are a real treat to play with... sean mooney a wonderful and sensitive piano player and a good friend, was instrumental in making this happen to which i'm grateful.. i thought i would take a song idea i was working on and see what it sounds like with cello as prominent instrument.. here is a sibelius generated sound file that gives an idea..

sometimes it feels like life is a long road that has an upward slope to it ongoingly! i think this is how i felt yesterday when i got this idea... you might feel this way too if you can bare listenning to this to the end, lol...

updated dec 12th

i came up with the first part of the melody while at doug dodds house on thursday night -dec 9th.. he has a wonderful grand piano in his room that inspires one! these are sib files sounds.. the chord sounds are missing from the middle part, but i have figured out the chords that i want..

i know there's a way to make sibelius swing, but without writing triplets into it all, i haven't figured it out! the middle part needs to be swung and it isn't on this version..

i think i have a working chart for this now dec 10th..  i never got formal training for knowing how to write charts for other musicians...  nico and miles have helped sharpen the importance of this..  dec 16th and i've revised this song again..  dec 24th... one can keep working on a tune forever.. that's what i'm doing here....the final part of this sibelius sound bite does not convey the intentions of the chart.. it has a solo section that isn't conveyed properly here...bear that in mind listening to the tail end of this...

can't remember when i wrote this but it was in the last year 2009-2010... kinda boring rhythmically, but i like the sentiment and movement of the song... this is a sibelius file converted to mp3 that i would like to play as well...

three friends

this is the first song i actually co-composed with my dear friend nico.. i mostly had an idea and he turned it into magic basically.. i love him for that and more!! we spent the early part of 2010 working together with another good friend nic sheasgreen and the title is based off our friendship with one another...

this is the 2nd song i wrote with nico rhodes this year.. he is such an amazing young musician/composer and i feel very blessed to know him.. he brings a certain classical background to his song writing abilities that takes ideas i have in a completely refreshing direction..

once again this is a template for a song idea that i would like to try in a small group situation.. this is from sibelius and i will probably do away with the scorch files as a consequence of learning how to make mp3's here..

slow folks

It look's like you don't have Adobe Flash Player installed. Get it now.

this song as with the last one are devoid of drums..   i plan on doing live versions of these songs where i play the drums as opposed to writing songs on sibelius music program... this song has a similar motif to the last one but is a different rhythm and tempo... i dedicated this song to my friend louis devoin... like the slow food movement he is an energy that i benefit from being around and considering with my generally ''fast'' paced approach to everything!

this is my first attempt at converting a sibelius file to mp3.. of course i have the help of brian here and i am at his place at present.. it is easier then i thought, but that is because brian is here helping me... this is a shortened version of this song..

This track was off a cassette i did with marc and scott in the early 90's live in jasper alberta... co-written by marc atkinson and scott white. this was really fun stuff we were doing from about 1991-95 which involved a lot of spontaneity and improvisation.
