in keeping with the 4 over 3, or 3 over 4 rhythms i've been working on this year - 4 musicians in a trio? okay, okay...
I'm fortunate in being able to play gigs around Vancouver Island at present.. for the past few years i have done music in a smaller setting under the name "Brio Trio".. I use the opportunity to create a musicial spirit similiar to what I've always enjoyed as a listener in the group dynamics of Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett or the Jim Hall Trio. i like to include songs from the Jobim repetoire given my affinity for liking latin type rhythms!
"Brio Trio" includes musicians that i love playing with.. Nico Rhodes, Darcy Philips or James Darling on piano, Marisha Devoin or Nic Sheasgreen on bass, and myself on drums. if i'm able to include another person to the trio, it's been other friends that i enjoy playing with as well, like Monik Nordine, Larry Miller, Marty Hilchey or Cam Wigmore.. i really appreciate the positive relationships i have with so many musicians here in nanaimo. the gig at VIEX this year will include Marty Hilchey, a wonderful saxophonist/songwriter who i've dug working with as part of a regular once a month jazz jam this past year which included a few other really fine musicians, Shawn Dakin acoustic bass and Brad Shipley - the guitar player in "The Big Bossa".
the pic clockwise from top left is Marty Hilchey, Marisha Devoin, Darcy Philips and James McRae. thanks to Darcy and Teresa for this pic!
